Revealing the Unpleasant: My Detention in Uganda for Capturing an Airport Moment!

As a travel blogger and adventure reporter, I have had the privilege of exploring numerous breathtaking destinations around the world. However, my experience at the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo in Kampala, Uganda in 2018 was marred by an unexpected and unsettling encounter. Today, I share the story of how I found myself detained in Uganda for innocently capturing a picture of the airport on my phone, shedding light on the importance of being cautious while visiting this otherwise beautiful country.

In 2018, I embarked on an assignment to cover the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo, an event hosted by the Uganda Tourism Board in Kampala. To reach my destination, I flew from Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana to Entebbe International Airport in Kampala via Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The excitement of the upcoming adventure filled the air as I boarded the Ethiopian Airlines flight.

Upon my arrival at Entebbe International Airport, I couldn’t help but admire the striking outmoded architecture of the airport building. Eager to capture the moment, I reached for my phone and discreetly took a picture of the magnificent structure. Little did I know that this innocent act would lead to an unexpected chain of events.

As I lowered my phone, a police officer approached me, accusing me of taking a photo of him. I was taken aback by the accusation and immediately explained that I had captured the airport building, not the officer himself. However, my words seemed to fall on deaf ears. The situation escalated rapidly, and before I knew it, I found myself detained at the airport.

Being detained in a foreign country is a disconcerting experience, particularly when you are a traveler expecting to explore and share the beauty of a destination. During my detainment, I couldn’t help but reflect on the hospitality and warmth I had encountered during my partially hosted familiarization (FAM) trip in Uganda.

Prior to the incident, I had the opportunity to explore remarkable destinations such as Murchison Falls, Jinja, and immerse myself in the vibrant nightlife of Kampala.

These experiences showcased the natural beauty and cultural richness of Uganda. However, the incident at the airport cast a shadow over my perception of the country’s security personnel and the police.

As a dedicated travel journalist, I have always strived to showcase the wonders of the world through my work. I rarely shared my unpleasant encounters amidst assignments, but the severity of this incident compelled me to break my silence. It is crucial for travel enthusiasts to be aware of the potential challenges they may face when visiting Uganda and take appropriate precautions.

During my time in detention, I observed a degree of hostility from both security personnel and the police, not only towards foreign nationals but also towards their fellow citizens. This experience left me with a sense of disappointment and led me to question the overall state of security in the country.

While detained, I faced an unsettling ordeal involving an attempt to extort money from me. The authorities demanded a bribe in order to secure my release. This unfortunate incident shed light on the corruption that can be present in certain situations, tarnishing the reputation of an otherwise incredible country.

Moreover, during the detention, the police forcibly took my phone and proceeded to delete a significant portion of its contents. This invasion of privacy and censorship had a profound impact on me, as it stripped away valuable memories and content that I had captured during my travels.

After hours of negotiation and the intervention of local authorities, I was eventually released from detention. However, the ordeal left a lasting mark on my perception of Uganda. It is important to note that this incident does not reflect the entirety of the country or its people. Uganda is home to a rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and friendly individuals who strive to promote tourism.

To address this issue, it is essential for travelers to exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings while visiting Uganda. Familiarizing oneself with local laws, customs, and potential sensitivities can help avoid misunderstandings. Furthermore, maintaining open communication, displaying respect towards authorities, and seeking assistance from the appropriate channels can go a long way in diffusing tense situations.

My detention in Uganda for capturing a picture of the airport on my phone during the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo was an unforeseen and disheartening experience. While it may have tainted my perception of the country initially, it is vital to remember that this incident does not define Uganda as a whole. It serves as a reminder to travel enthusiasts to exercise caution, conduct thorough research, and take necessary precautions when exploring unfamiliar territories.

By sharing my story, I hope to raise awareness among fellow travel addicts and ensure they approach their journeys with a sense of adventure but also with a keen understanding of potential challenges. Uganda, with its remarkable landscapes, rich culture, and warm-hearted people, still holds immense potential for travelers seeking unique experiences.
