HMS Dragon Cyprus defence has officially begun tonight as the Royal Navy frigate integrates into operations supporting Cyprus, UK Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed. The deployment follows an Iranian drone strike on RAF Akrotiri three weeks ago, an attack that heightened concerns over regional security and the readiness of British forces in the eastern Mediterranean.
Speaking to members of Parliament, Healey stated, “I can confirm that HMS Dragon has arrived in the eastern Mediterranean, and tonight begins operational integration into Cyprus’s defence alongside allies.” The confirmation underscores the UK’s intent to visibly strengthen deterrence in the region at a time of rising tensions.
The frigate left Portsmouth on March 10 after a rapid six-day refit, a pace markedly shorter than the typical six-week turnaround. This accelerated deployment reflects the growing urgency in response to Middle East instability. During its transit, allied naval forces from France, Greece, and Italy provided escort and operational support, helping secure the approach to Cyprus and ensuring that the island’s defences were reinforced despite earlier criticism of delayed British action.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the UK’s preparedness, stressing the presence of substantial military assets on Cyprus. “We’ve got a lot of defensive capability in Cyprus, including the air capability there,” he said. Starmer emphasized ongoing collaboration, noting that UK and Cypriot military teams are operating closer than ever to coordinate intelligence, patrols, and rapid response measures.
The Prime Minister also spoke with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides to reaffirm that RAF Akrotiri would not be used in wider arrangements for US operations in the region.
