Traveling to Europe Without Your GHIC or EHIC? This Is How a PRC Can Save the Day.
When planning a trip abroad, ensuring access to medical services is essential. UK citizens traveling internationally, particularly to the Schengen Area, have several healthcare options that can make a huge difference if they need medical attention. For many, the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is their first line of support for healthcare abroad.
But what happens if you forget these cards at home or they go missing? In that case, the Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) can be a lifesaver. Simple to acquire, the PRC gives you quick access to essential healthcare services if health issues arise while you’re abroad.
This guide will explore the benefits of GHIC, EHIC, and PRC, their coverage, and how to apply for each, so you’re fully prepared for health emergencies in the Schengen Area.
What Are GHIC & EHIC?
The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) is the key document for UK travelers heading to the European Economic Area (EEA), granting them access to public healthcare services in these regions as if they were residents. Plus, GHIC isn’t limited to the EEA; it can also be used in places like Montenegro, Australia, Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, and several UK Overseas Territories.
GHIC even covers Switzerland for British nationals, Swiss nationals from the UK, EU citizens, and some of their family members.
What Services Does GHIC Cover?
GHIC provides essential public healthcare coverage in participating countries, including:
- Emergency treatments for accidents or sudden illnesses
- General medical consultations for necessary health issues
- Prescriptions for medications as needed
- Maternity care services, excluding labor and delivery
- Treatment for pre-existing conditions like diabetes
How to Apply for GHIC
If you’re a UK resident, applying for a GHIC is straightforward. You’ll need to provide your full name, address, date of birth, and National Insurance number. Residents of Northern Ireland will also need their health and care number. Applications can be made for yourself and any dependents, such as a spouse or children.
A GHIC card is valid for five years, and you can renew it up to nine months before it expires. Processing is usually quick, with approval or denial within 24 hours, and approved cards are mailed within 15 working days.
EHIC: Similar, but Not for New Applicants
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) previously provided the same coverage as the GHIC and was valid across the EEA and Switzerland. However, since Brexit, new EHIC applications aren’t permitted for UK citizens. Those with valid EHIC cards can continue using them, but upon expiration, they must apply for a GHIC instead.
Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC): A Handy Backup
The Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) can serve as a temporary substitute if you’re abroad without your GHIC or EHIC. This document can be especially helpful if you forgot or lost your GHIC. The PRC offers the same healthcare access as GHIC, covering essential medical services and is easily obtainable through the NHS Overseas Healthcare Services online or by phone.
To apply, you’ll need to provide your email address, National Insurance number, and details about the medical facility treating you. PRC applications are generally restricted to individuals who have not yet received or completed medical treatment in Iceland, Norway, or Liechtenstein. Additionally, PRC can only be requested while you are traveling, not in advance.
Do You Still Need Travel Insurance?
Even with a GHIC, EHIC, or PRC, travel insurance is crucial. These cards cover medical treatment, but they don’t protect you from other costly incidents, like missed flights or lost luggage. Travel insurance offers comprehensive coverage that keeps you protected from unexpected expenses that might otherwise turn a health emergency into a financial burden.
For UK travelers heading to the EU, travel insurance is strongly recommended as it covers more than just health costs, providing peace of mind for a worry-free journey.
