Finnair’s Pilot Union has announced a strike set for December 9 (pilots) and December 13 (first officers), 2024, potentially creating significant disruption for travelers during the busy pre-holiday season.
In anticipation of the strike, Finnair has preemptively canceled approximately 300 flights scheduled for those two days, with additional cancellations expected to affect flights on December 10, 11, and 14. The airline has released a detailed list of affected flights and is working to reroute passengers where possible.
Finnair’s Official Statement
According to a press release from Finnair, the strike—organized by the Finnish Air Line Pilots’ Association—will impact roughly 33,000 customers.
“It is deeply disappointing that the pilots’ union has chosen to strike rather than continue negotiations,” said Jaakko Schildt, Finnair’s Chief Operating Officer. “This action disrupts the travel plans of thousands of passengers during a critical travel period. Our priority is to minimize the inconvenience by rerouting as many customers as possible and providing necessary support.”
Flight Cancellations and Customer Support
Finnair has canceled approximately 140 flights on December 9 and 150 flights on December 13. Affected customers will be notified of their cancellations and provided with alternative flight options when possible. Details of new routes will be available through Finnair’s Manage Booking service and mobile app.
However, given the sheer volume of passengers requiring assistance, some may face delays in receiving alternate arrangements. Finnair has advised those unable to secure a suitable rerouting to contact their customer service team for additional options. Passengers who cannot find alternative flights can request a refund directly from Finnair or their travel agent.
“We sincerely apologize for the stress and inconvenience this situation is causing,” Schildt said. “Rerouting thousands of travelers is a complex process, and we kindly ask for your patience as we work through this.”
Passenger Rights: What You’re Entitled To
Under EC Regulation 261/2004, affected passengers are entitled to several forms of assistance:
- Rebooking Options: Airlines must rebook passengers on alternative flights to their final destination as quickly as possible. This includes flights operated by other airlines like Lufthansa, British Airways, or Emirates if necessary.
- Duty of Care: If cancellations or delays cause extended waits, Finnair must cover reasonable expenses for meals, accommodation, and transportation. Passengers can arrange these services independently and claim reimbursement later if Finnair cannot provide them directly.
- Compensation: Strikes by airline staff are not classified as “extraordinary circumstances,” so passengers may qualify for compensation of up to €600 per person if their final arrival is delayed significantly.
Planning Ahead
Finnair’s management seems confident the strike will go ahead, as they have already begun widespread cancellations—a move often avoided unless an agreement appears unlikely.
For the approximately 33,000 passengers whose travel plans are affected, Finnair is doing its best to arrange alternatives. However, customers should prepare for potential delays and explore options to ensure smooth travel during this challenging period.

Pro Tip: If you’re flying on one of the strike days or the days surrounding them, double-check your travel insurance policy to ensure you’re covered for unexpected delays or additional costs.
