Espoo Strengthens Cooperation with India Through Technology and Trade

Espoo strengthens cooperation with India as Finnish business, technology, and innovation networks expand their presence in the South Asian market. Mayor Kai Mykkänen joined Finland’s state visit to India from March 4 to 7, 2026, alongside President Alexander Stubb. A large Finnish business delegation accompanied them, including Espoo-based companies Nokia, Kone, ICEYE, and Neste, highlighting the city’s role as a hub for technology and international business.

Espoo Strengthens Cooperation with India Through Technology and Trade

Espoo has developed a unique position in Finland due to its strong Indian community, which contributes significantly to attracting talent, investment, and companies from India. The city’s international atmosphere, robust technology ecosystem, and quality education systems make it a natural partner for deepening collaboration across trade, research, and innovation.

“Our Indian community is a huge asset. They build bridges between expertise, companies, and cultures. The EU-India trade agreement opens opportunities for Espoo companies, especially in technology, artificial intelligence, and space cooperation. We want to be an active partner in this development and strengthen Espoo’s role as an international hub of expertise,” said Mayor Mykkänen.

During the state visit, Mykkänen participated in the Finland-India business event. The discussions focused on infrastructure, industry, skills development, and expanding economic relations between Finland and India. He also met with local business leaders to explore new partnerships and investment opportunities. Espoo’s companies and research institutions are particularly well-positioned to collaborate in areas of advanced technology, deep tech, and space innovation.

The European Union and India signed a trade agreement in January 2026, aimed at boosting trade between the regions. The EU is already one of India’s largest trading partners, and the new agreement is expected to double European exports to India. India has accelerated cooperation with Europe in technology and defense, and the agreement strengthens these ties while creating new opportunities for Finnish companies to enter emerging markets.

Espoo’s expertise aligns closely with India’s ambitions to become a leader in technology and space. Companies in Espoo have experience in artificial intelligence, deep technology, and space systems, which creates fertile ground for collaboration. The Indian community in Espoo plays a central role in connecting Finnish and Indian talent, helping companies bridge cultural and technical divides. Mayor Mykkänen also discussed these opportunities with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing Espoo’s potential to contribute to innovation and joint development initiatives.

By leveraging its international networks, high-level expertise, and strong business community, Espoo is positioning itself as a key partner in Finland’s engagement with India. The city’s active role in trade, technology, and education strengthens bilateral relations while offering practical benefits for both nations. Cooperation between Espoo and India is no longer limited to diplomacy but extends into business, research, and the creation of innovative solutions for the global market.
