Trump Confirms Secret Nuclear Deal Talks with Iran: "Better for Iran to Negotiate

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has disclosed that he initiated secret nuclear deal negotiations with Iran. Trump shared this information during an interview with Fox Business on Friday, March 7, revealing that he had sent a letter to Iran’s leadership the previous day, hoping to open up dialogue and strike a deal.

“I said I hope you’re going to negotiate because it’s going to be a lot better for Iran,” Trump said during the interview. “I think they want to get that letter. The other alternative is we have to do something, because you can’t let another nuclear weapon happen.”

The letter was addressed to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has yet to respond publicly. Trump emphasized that there were two possible approaches to dealing with Iran: militarily or diplomatically through a deal. “I would prefer to make a deal because I’m not looking to hurt Iran. They’re great people,” he added.

Trump’s latest effort comes years after he withdrew the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 during his first term in office. That decision strained relations between the two countries and escalated tensions in the region.

Last month, Khamenei made it clear that reopening nuclear talks with the U.S. would not be a strategic move. “Negotiating with America is neither smart, wise, nor honorable,” Khamenei said, marking the anniversary of Iran’s 1979 revolution. “It will not solve any of our problems. The reason? Experience!”

Trump’s outreach comes against a backdrop of heightened tensions. Just last Tuesday, he signed an executive order aimed at intensifying pressure on Tehran. During the signing, Trump issued a stark warning. If Iran carried out threats to assassinate him in retaliation for the killing of Quds Force leader Qasem Soleimani, Trump said the consequences would be severe.

“If they did that, they would be obliterated,” Trump stated. “I have left instructions. If they do it, they get obliterated — there won’t be anything left.”

Trump acknowledged feeling conflicted about imposing tougher sanctions on Iran, explaining that his preference was to broker a deal to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. “I’m torn because I’d love to make a deal with Iran. It’s better for everyone,” he said.

Khamenei, however, remained unmoved by Trump’s outreach, blaming the former president for the collapse of the previous nuclear agreement. “The person in charge tore it up,” Khamenei said. “They shouldn’t expect us to make the same mistake again.”

Adding to the friction, Khamenei also rejected Trump’s proposal for the U.S. to take control of Gaza — an idea floated during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent visit to the White House.

“On paper, Americans are changing the world map,” Khamenei remarked. “Of course, it’s only on paper because it’s devoid of reality.”

Trump’s latest attempt at negotiation underscores the complex and fragile nature of U.S.-Iran relations, with both sides standing firm in their positions.
