The original cast members of the beloved musical Wicked made a dazzling appearance in Los Angeles, reuniting to support the film adaptation’s premiere alongside stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
Broadway icons Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda in the 2003 stage production, joined the film’s lead actresses on the black carpet on Saturday. Menzel, now 53 and a Tony Award winner for her portrayal of the misunderstood green witch, wore a sleek, floor-length black gown with an asymmetrical neckline, accessorized with a chic clutch. Chenoweth, 56, looked radiant in a bold, gold strapless mini dress with a structured silhouette.
Erivo and Grande, who take on the iconic roles of Elphaba and Glinda in the upcoming film, each dressed in colors that paid homage to their characters. Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey, who steps into the role of the charming prince Fiyero, added a playful touch with ruby red slippers—an ode to Dorothy’s shoes from the original Wizard of Oz film, tying back to the story’s roots.
The film adaptation brings Wicked’s magic to the big screen in two parts, exploring the powerful bond between Elphaba and Glinda during their university years and the events that lead to their legendary rivalry. These beloved characters, known in L. Frank Baum’s classic as the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the South, will appear in theaters with part one releasing on November 22, followed by the second installment in November 2025.
Grande embraced her character’s whimsical essence, dressed in a vintage-inspired pink gingham gown with a capelet, matching white gloves, and pearl earrings. Her hair, swept up into a stylish bun with a bow to match her dress, and rhinestone-encrusted heels added an extra layer of glamour to the ensemble.
Meanwhile, Erivo, 37, radiated in a vivid green latex dress complete with feathered details and an emerald-diamond necklace, embodying Elphaba’s distinct flair. Bailey, 36, paired his ruby slippers with white trousers and a metallic silver shirt, featuring a red poppy in honor of Remembrance Sunday.
Joining the cast was Ethan Slater, who plays Boq, dressed in a dark green velvet blazer, as well as music legend Jennifer Lopez, who graced the event in a beaded gown with gold and pink details, adding even more sparkle to the premiere night.
This anticipated adaptation of Wicked promises to reimagine the friendship and complex journey of two unlikely friends on the path to becoming the most iconic witches of Oz.
