The British Fashion Council (BFC) and Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW) have announced a significant new partnership aimed at uniting efforts to drive sustainability across the British and Nordic fashion industries. This collaboration represents a key step forward in aligning global initiatives to address the environmental challenges faced by the fashion sector.
At the heart of this partnership is the integration of Copenhagen Fashion Week’s Sustainability Requirements into the BFC’s initiatives. Beginning in 2025, the BFC will embed these standards into the criteria for its renowned BFC NEWGEN program, in collaboration with Pull&Bear. A pilot phase will commence during the onboarding process, with full implementation scheduled for January 2026.
BFC NEWGEN, celebrated as a leading global program for emerging fashion talent, supports innovative and visionary designer businesses in the UK. Applications for the 2025 cohort are now open, inviting creative brands that have been operating for under three years to participate in this transformative initiative.
Caroline Rush, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration:
“We are proud to align with Copenhagen Fashion Week’s Sustainability Requirements through BFC NEWGEN in partnership with Pull&Bear. Building on our existing Minimum Standards, this partnership reinforces our commitment to fostering meaningful change within the global fashion industry. Together, we are establishing a framework that equips emerging designers to lead the way in creating a more sustainable and responsible future for fashion.”
Cecilie Thorsmark, CEO of Copenhagen Fashion Week, highlighted the broader impact of the partnership:
“We are thrilled to collaborate with the British Fashion Council to extend the reach of our Sustainability Requirements. This partnership represents a vital step toward industry-wide alignment and underscores the unique role that fashion weeks and councils play in driving progress. With the BFC as a key figure in the global fashion arena, this collaboration has the potential to amplify our shared commitment to sustainability on an international scale.”
Building on the Work of the Institute of Positive Fashion
This partnership forms a vital part of the BFC’s broader sustainability agenda, spearheaded by the Institute of Positive Fashion (IPF). Established to address the environmental impact of the fashion industry, the IPF acts as a think tank, offering guidance on sustainable practices and climate action while fostering collaboration, research, and education.
As the IPF approaches its fifth anniversary in 2025, this collaboration with Copenhagen Fashion Week underscores the BFC’s ongoing dedication to shaping a more sustainable future. By aligning efforts with industry leaders, the BFC aims to inspire long-lasting change and support the next generation of designers in adopting innovative and responsible practices.
