Book Borrowing in Finland Hits 19-Year High But Authors See Lower Pay

Book borrowing in Finland reached its highest point since 2005, according to new figures from the literary copyright agency Sanasto. In 2024, printed book loans rose by 4 percent compared to the previous year, showing a renewed interest in physical books across the country.

Children’s fiction led the charge. For the third consecutive year, this category set a new annual record. The numbers show a steady rise in young readers engaging with books at their local libraries, giving life to spaces that remain deeply tied to Finnish culture.

But while readers benefit, authors are not.

Despite the boost in library usage, writers are earning less. Sanasto reported a decline in author compensation tied to library loans, even though book circulation is on the rise. No official explanation was given, leaving many in the literary world frustrated.

One name stood out in 2024. Satu Rämö, a Finnish-Icelandic author, dominated the top three spots for most borrowed Finnish novels. Her growing popularity reflects a clear appetite for strong, homegrown storytelling that resonates with modern readers.

Public interest in libraries continues to grow. Sanasto highlighted the trend as proof that libraries still play a critical role in access to literature. Even in a digital world, people in Finland are still checking out printed books in large numbers.

However, the gap between reader enthusiasm and writer income remains a problem. Books are being borrowed more often, but those behind the words are not seeing that reflected in their earnings.
