Attempted murder of baby dominates headlines in Oulu after a 32-year-old man, remanded in custody for allegedly attacking his two-week-old son, died in prison on Tuesday. Authorities received notice of the death at approximately 7 a.m., and police have confirmed that no foul play is suspected. An official inquest has been opened to establish the cause of death.

The suspect had appeared before Oulu District Court on Monday, where the court ordered his continued detention in connection with the attempted murder allegations. In addition, prosecutors had charged him separately with rape in a case initiated in mid-February. That case had not yet been scheduled for a hearing.
Police report that they arrested the man early on Friday after a neighbor called emergency services. The caller claimed the suspect had assaulted both his partner and their newborn child in a residential building near central Oulu.
Investigators initially classified the incident as aggravated assault. However, during the evidence-gathering and questioning phase, police reclassified the suspected offence against the infant as attempted murder. According to police statements, officers suspect the father threw the baby onto a concrete stairwell floor, resulting in serious injuries. The infant remains hospitalized, though authorities have withheld specific details about the child’s condition.
The mother, aged 26, also sustained injuries during the incident, though they were reportedly less severe than those suffered by her child.
Records show the man worked professionally as a musician. He was reportedly facing civil claims from creditors for unpaid debts totaling tens of thousands of euros.
Despite the suspect’s death, police continue to investigate the suspected attempted murder of the infant and the alleged assault of the mother. Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active and further details may be released as the inquest progresses.
