Police in northern Finland detained two young drivers on Thursday following separate high-speed incidents that raised serious suspicions of aggravated endangerment of traffic safety. Both events occurred near Oulu and involved dangerous speeding well beyond legal limits.
The first incident took place around 5 pm when a motorcycle patrol officer noticed a motorcyclist speeding in the municipality of Iis, north of Oulu. After spotting the officer, the rider accelerated rapidly, reaching speeds over 220 km/h.
The motorcyclist then turned southbound onto an older motorway, attempting to evade the police. During the chase, police reported multiple dangerous situations but initially lost the rider. Tips from the public helped police later locate and detain the suspect.
The detained individual is an 18-year-old foreign man who is now suspected of aggravated endangerment of traffic safety.
Later that evening, around 9 pm, police stopped a second speeding vehicle on highway 4, just north of Oulu. A passenger car with foreign plates was recorded traveling at an average speed of 180 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. The high-speed run lasted for over three kilometres.
The driver, a 19-year-old foreign man, was also detained and faces suspicion of aggravated endangerment of traffic safety.
Authorities continue to investigate both cases. The police warn that such reckless driving endangers all road users and will be met with strict legal consequences.
