Oulu father remanded after a district court hearing on Monday, as authorities investigate the suspected attempted killing of his two-week-old son and an assault on the child’s mother. Prosecutors are required to file formal charges by 7 May.

Police allege that in the early hours of Friday, the 32-year-old man assaulted his partner before throwing the infant onto a concrete floor in a stairwell of a central Oulu apartment building. A neighbour who witnessed the incident immediately contacted emergency services.
The baby suffered serious injuries and remains under hospital care. Police have declined to disclose the child’s current condition, citing medical privacy regulations.
The case initially entered the legal system as an investigation into aggravated assault. Following further evidence collection, investigators reclassified the suspected offence against the infant as attempted manslaughter.
The suspect, born in 1993, appeared at the remand hearing via video link. The session was held without public attendance. Media representatives were briefly permitted to film the video feed, during which the man obscured his face with sheets of paper.
The Oulu District Court determined there was probable cause to suspect the man of both attempted manslaughter and assault, resulting in his immediate remand into custody. Police also suspect he struck and kicked the child’s 26-year-old mother. Investigators are pursuing that allegation separately as assault. According to police, her injuries were less severe than those sustained by the infant.
Authorities note that the suspect has no prior criminal record. Public records indicate that he has released rap music for several years and has faced significant financial claims in court, with debts totaling tens of thousands of euros.
The investigation remains active, and police continue to collect evidence regarding the circumstances of the incident. The case highlights both the legal scrutiny applied to suspected violent acts against children and the judicial process for remanding individuals in custody while formal charges are prepared.
