Ghana Armed Forces Recruitment Tragedy Leaves Six Female Applicants Dead and Several Injured

The Ghana Armed Forces recruitment tragedy has shaken the entire country after a deadly stampede at the El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra claimed the lives of six young women and left at least twelve other applicants in critical condition. The incident unfolded during the early hours of Wednesday, November 12, when thousands of hopeful job seekers crowded the stadium for the 2025 and 2026 enlistment process. The large numbers created heavy pressure at the entry points, leading to a sudden rush that turned into a fatal stampede.

President John Mahama expressed deep sorrow over the event, describing it as a painful national loss. He confirmed that the victims were young women who had simply hoped for a chance to serve their country. He added that prayers are ongoing for the twelve applicants who remain in critical condition after the stampede.

The President has also directed the suspension of the nationwide recruitment exercise. He stated that the process will not continue until a full investigation is completed and a safer structure is put in place. In his words, the Armed Forces must adopt a fresh approach that prevents any similar tragedy from happening in the future.

The Ghana Armed Forces released a statement confirming the deaths and the suspension of the Accra phase of the recruitment. According to the statement, the Greater Accra exercise has been put on hold in order to apply additional safety measures. A Board of Inquiry has been established to investigate the events that triggered the stampede and to recommend stronger safety protocols.

Following the incident, President Mahama stressed the need for better crowd control and improved safety planning for national recruitment or public mobilisation activities. He called for a system that protects applicants and ensures safe movement at entry and screening points.

As investigations continue, the injured are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra. The Armed Forces have assured the public that recruitment in the remaining fifteen regions will move ahead under enhanced safety protocols to prevent any future incidents.
