US Accuses Iran Plot to Kill Israeli Ambassador in Mexico

Iran plot to kill Israeli ambassador has become a major global headline as the United States accuses Tehran of planning to assassinate Israel’s ambassador in Mexico. American officials said the operation was part of Iran’s growing effort to extend its conflict with Israel beyond the Middle East.

Iran Plot To Kill Israeli Ambassador

A senior US official, speaking anonymously, stated that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Quds Force began organizing the plan in late 2024. The attempt was disrupted earlier this year before it could be executed.

“The plot was contained and does not pose a current threat,” the official explained. “This adds to Iran’s long record of targeting diplomats, journalists, dissidents, and anyone who disagrees with their leadership. Every nation where Iran has a presence should treat this seriously.”

No additional details were shared about how the plot was discovered or prevented. Iran’s mission to the United Nations declined to comment on the matter.

US intelligence agencies have for years warned that Iranian operatives are active across Latin America. Tehran’s close relationship with Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has raised ongoing concerns about its influence in the region.

The alleged plot followed Israel’s strike on Iran’s embassy compound in Damascus in April 2024, which killed several senior officers of the Revolutionary Guards. That attack prompted vows of revenge from Tehran. Later, Iran launched missiles and drones at Israel, and about a year after that, Israel retaliated with a bombing campaign inside Iran that reportedly killed over 1,000 people. US forces were said to have joined strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Iran remains a key supporter of Hamas, the group behind the October 7, 2023 attack that reignited the Gaza war. Since then, Israel’s military response has extended into Syria, Lebanon, Qatar, and Yemen.

Israeli intelligence agencies have repeatedly accused the Quds Force of directing attacks on Israeli and Jewish interests abroad. Australia recently expelled Iran’s ambassador after linking Iranian operatives to arson attacks on a synagogue in Melbourne and a kosher restaurant in Sydney.

Latin America has also faced past violence tied to Middle East conflicts. The 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires killed 85 people. Both Argentina and Israel blame Hezbollah, believed to have acted under Iranian orders.

Despite Iran’s harsh stance toward Israel, it still hosts a small Jewish community. Mexico, where the alleged plot was directed, also has a sizable Jewish population and maintains diplomatic relations with Israel while taking a more cautious view of the Gaza war.

If verified, the alleged Iran plot to kill Israeli ambassador would mark another expansion of Middle Eastern hostilities into other continents. It underscores how Iran’s military and intelligence operations now stretch beyond regional borders to strike perceived enemies abroad.

For Washington and its allies, the case stands as another reminder of Tehran’s global network and its willingness to retaliate far from home. For Mexico, it brings new concerns about becoming a possible stage for international political violence.
