Liverpool Boss Arne Slot Banned for Two Matches and Fined £70,000 After Touchline Incident

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been handed a two-match touchline suspension along with a hefty £70,000 fine following his red card incident at the end of the Merseyside derby earlier this month.

This ruling means Slot will be absent from the sidelines for Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League clash against Newcastle on Wednesday night, as well as their home fixture against Southampton on March 8. The club was officially notified of the FA’s decision on Tuesday.

The incident occurred after Liverpool’s dramatic 2-2 draw against Everton, where Slot was seen shaking hands with referee Michael Oliver before exchanging words with the official. Moments later, the Dutchman was shown a straight red card.

According to the FA, Slot’s conduct was deemed inappropriate, stating that he acted in an “improper manner” and allegedly used “insulting and/or abusive words and/or behavior” toward both the match referee and an assistant referee. The Liverpool boss has since admitted to the charge.

Slot’s assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, was also dismissed at the final whistle and has now received a two-match touchline ban along with a £7,000 fine. The FA cited similar reasons, stating that Hulshoff acted in an improper manner and used inappropriate language or behavior towards match officials after being sent off.

Midfielder Curtis Jones was another casualty of the heated encounter, receiving a post-match red card after picking up a second yellow following a confrontation with Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Both clubs have also faced financial penalties for their roles in the chaotic ending. Everton has been fined £65,000, while Liverpool will have to pay £50,000 after the FA ruled that their players “failed to behave in a proper manner and/or acted in a provocative way” following the final whistle.

With tensions running high, Liverpool will now have to navigate their next two matches without their head coach on the touchline—a setback that could impact their push in the Premier League standings.
