Finland Tax Refunds 2025: Over €1.4 Billion to Be Paid to 1.5 Million Taxpayers

Finland tax refunds are set to reach more than €1.4 billion this Wednesday, benefiting roughly 1.5 million taxpayers. Officials say this marks the largest single tax refund payout of the year. From July to September, the average refund stands at €734, slightly higher than during the same period in 2024, according to Verohallinto figures.

Refund amounts vary significantly by region. Åland residents will receive the highest average refund at €802, while taxpayers in North Karelia receive the lowest, averaging €659. This difference reflects the ongoing regional variation in income and tax profiles across Finland.

The refund schedule has changed in recent years. Previously issued at the end of the calendar year, refunds now arrive in the summer months, with payments reaching bank accounts in July, August, and September.

In contrast to refunds, nearly 416,000 taxpayers will need to pay outstanding taxes early next week, totaling €336 million. These back taxes, or jäännösverot, are issued when withholding during the year has been insufficient to cover actual tax obligations.

The average back tax bill for July to September is €1,230 per person, roughly €100 higher than in 2024. Åland again records the highest average payment at €1,918 per taxpayer, while Päijät-Häme has the lowest at €903.

Taxpayers can review individual payments or refunds through Verohallinto’s MyTax online portal. The agency continues to warn against fraudulent messages that impersonate official notices, advising users not to click on suspicious links.

These refund and back tax numbers highlight regional differences and income patterns across Finland. Verohallinto has not published specific reasons for the increase in average refund and back tax amounts compared to last year.

The next refund dates depend on when each taxpayer’s return was processed, but the upcoming Wednesday represents the highest payout for 2025. Refund and back tax payments will continue into September, and taxpayers with unpaid taxes are encouraged to confirm deadlines and amounts through official channels to avoid penalties.
