One in Three Young People in Finland Delay Having Children Over Security Fears

One in three young people in Finland has postponed or abandoned the idea of having children because of worries about the global security situation. The findings come from a survey commissioned by Nuorisoala ry, which reveals how deeply uncertainty is shaping the choices of the younger generation.

According to the study, most Finnish youth believe the country’s security will decline over the next five years. The results show that safety concerns are no longer just about politics and foreign policy. They are starting to shape the most personal aspects of life, including family planning and long-term future decisions.

The online survey was conducted by Norstat Finland and collected answers from more than 1,000 people aged 15 to 30. When participants were asked how Europe should deal with ongoing security challenges, women most often pointed to diplomacy and peace-building efforts. Men were more likely to support stronger EU defence policies.

The survey highlights a clear divide in how young Finns view solutions, but it also underlines one shared reality. Security fears are now influencing whether or not young people plan to start families in Finland.
