Finland U20 athletics made history in Tampere this summer, delivering the nation’s strongest performance at the European Athletics U20 Championships in more than 20 years. The home crowd saw Finland’s rising stars win a total of seven medals, marking a proud moment for the future of Finnish sport.

The team secured four silver medals and three bronze medals, surpassing their previous best since 1999, when Finland claimed 10 medals in Latvia. This year’s achievement also broke the record of five medals set in 2001, 2017, and 2021.
The silver medals were won by Ella Mikkola in the high jump, Aatu Kangasniemi in the shot put, Mico Lampinen in the hammer throw, and Rebecca Nelimarkka in the javelin. Bronze went to Enni Virjonen in the heptathlon, Pinja Karha in the hammer throw, and Kangasniemi again in the hammer throw.
Finland ranked eighth overall out of 33 nations in the final Placing Table. Consistent high finishes, including several fourth and fifth place results, added valuable points to the total. In all, the team collected 80 points, a sign of depth across events.
Athletics expert Jesse Jokinen of Yle Sport praised the team’s competitive mindset. He explained that the ability to perform under competition pressure is what separates good athletes from great ones. According to Jokinen, several members of the Finnish squad have this quality, which is essential for success at the highest level.
He highlighted Ella Mikkola and Enni Virjonen as two young talents with the potential to reach elite European standards in the coming years.
The four-day championship brought together the top under-20 athletes from across Europe, with eligibility for those born between 2006 and 2009. Tampere served as host city from Thursday to Sunday, showcasing the next generation of European track and field talent.
