David Beckham knighthood has been officially announced in King Charles’ Birthday Honours list. The Manchester United and England legend, who captained both club and country, now holds one of the UK’s highest accolades for his impact in sports and charity.
Back in 2003, Beckham received an OBE for his services. Now, this honour marks the next level in recognition. Reflecting on the achievement, Beckham said, “To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true.” He continued, “Off the pitch, I have been fortunate to represent Britain globally and work with incredible organisations supporting communities in need and inspiring future generations.”
He added, “I am lucky to do the work I do and grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment. It will take a while for this news to sink in. I am immensely proud and it is an emotional moment to share with my family.”
Beckham’s time with England saw him earn 115 caps, 59 of those as captain. He featured in three World Cups, scoring in each tournament and playing in all major competitions for England between 1998 and 2006. At club level, Beckham was a key figure in Sir Alex Ferguson’s famous Class of ‘92 at Manchester United. He helped secure six Premier League titles and was instrumental in the 1999 treble-winning season.
His club career also included spells with Real Madrid’s Galacticos, LA Galaxy where he helped boost Major League Soccer’s profile, AC Milan, and PSG before retiring in 2013.
Beyond football, Beckham has been deeply involved in charity work. Since 2005, he has served as a UNICEF ambassador and joined The King’s Foundation in 2024. He was a major figure in London’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympics and today co-owns Inter Miami CF in MLS.
Manchester United shared their congratulations, saying, “Massive congratulations from everyone at United on this special achievement, Becks – you truly deserve this.”
Beckham was not alone in the King’s Birthday Honours spotlight. Rising darts stars Luke Littler and Luke Humphries received MBEs for their contributions. Former England footballer Rachel Daly, part of the Euro 2022 winning squad who retired in April 2024, was also honoured with an MBE.
Olympic triathlete Alistair Brownlee received an OBE, and tennis icon Virginia Wade was awarded a CBE.
