The US Embassy in Moscow has warned of a credible threat of a possible mass casualty attack at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, a popular historic attraction in the Russian capital, prompting security concerns and a response from Russian authorities.

In a security alert issued on Saturday, October 31, the embassy said it was aware of a credible threat involving an incident that could result in mass casualties at the museum complex. It confirmed that the US government was coordinating with the appropriate Russian authorities to address the threat.

The embassy advised American citizens to stay away from the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve for the day and urged them to remain alert, avoid crowded places and follow local developments.

Its safety recommendations also included keeping mobile phones fully charged, carrying valid identification, reviewing personal security plans and monitoring local media for further announcements.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) later confirmed that it had received information from American officials about preparations for a possible terrorist attack in Moscow. The agency told Russian state media that it was taking appropriate action following the information shared by its US counterparts.

Russian media subsequently reported that the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve had been temporarily closed and that law enforcement agencies had restricted access to the surrounding park. The reported measures came as authorities responded to the security warning.

The Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve is one of Moscow’s notable historic and recreational destinations. Commissioned in 1775 as a summer residence for Empress Catherine the Great, the complex includes historic palace buildings, landscaped gardens, woodland areas and ponds.

The site attracts visitors interested in Russian history and architecture, as well as residents who use its extensive grounds for recreation. Its reported temporary closure therefore affects access to a significant cultural and public space in the capital.

Neither the embassy’s warning nor the FSB’s statement, as described in the original reports, confirmed that an attack had taken place. The alert concerned a credible threat and preparations for a possible attack, with security measures being taken in response.
