Ghana Airways is targeting a return to the skies in 2027, more than two decades after the former national carrier ceased operations, as President John Dramani Mahama pushes ahead with plans to revive the airline.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed the target, saying a technical committee established by Mahama to oversee the proposed revival had submitted its report. The President has also held talks with executives of American aircraft manufacturer Boeing as part of efforts to advance the plan.

“And I can confirm to you that President Mahama’s target is that next year, 2027, we will have Ghana Airways back in the skies,” Ablakwa said.
One of the proposed airline’s priority routes is a direct connection between Ghana and Canada. According to Ablakwa, Mahama wants the service to make travel easier for Ghanaians living in Canada while strengthening links between the two countries.
A direct route could also support business travel, tourism and visits between families and communities in Ghana and the diaspora. However, the proposed service remains part of the airline’s revival plans, and the announcement does not establish that a route has been finalised or that flights are available for booking.
The Ghana-Canada proposal follows an air transport agreement signed by the two countries in March 2025. The agreement allows multiple airlines from Ghana and Canada to operate scheduled passenger and cargo services, with capacity for up to 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly cargo flights for airlines of each country. It created a framework for expanded air connections, although it does not confirm that Ghana Airways will operate a particular route.
Ghana Airways stopped operating in July 2004 after years of financial losses and mounting debt. A successor, Ghana International Airlines, was later established but also ceased operations in 2010. The latest proposal would therefore mark another attempt to establish a national carrier capable of serving Ghana’s international travel needs.
How to Plan a First Trip to Ghana: Entry Requirements, Costs, Transport and Places to Visit
Despite the 2027 target and discussions with Boeing, key details of the proposed revival remain unclear. The announcement does not provide a confirmed launch date, a finalised fleet plan or details of the airline’s operating arrangements. The committee’s report has been submitted, but its recommendations have not been outlined in the information made public.
For travellers, the prospect of a direct Ghana-Canada service is one of the most significant elements of the plan. However, passengers should wait for an official announcement confirming the route, schedule, ticket sales and operating airline before making travel arrangements based on the proposed service.
