More than 500,000 people are believed to have taken part in the demonstrations, including approximately 110,000 in Paris, according to figures cited in reports of the protests. What began as widespread public demonstrations over rising living costs escalated into scenes of destruction in several major French cities.

Violence was reported in Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Rennes, Strasbourg, Grenoble, Nice, Toulouse and Limoges, as well as the French capital. Buildings and vehicles were set on fire, while confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers disrupted parts of the country.

Limoges was among the worst-affected locations. A fierce blaze almost completely destroyed the town hall, leaving one of the most striking images of a day marked by fires, damaged property and clashes with police.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said on Sunday that more than 500 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters had been injured during the demonstrations. Authorities also reported that 1,800 people had been arrested, highlighting the scale of the unrest and the pressure placed on emergency services.

President Emmanuel Macron responded to the violence in a social media post on Saturday evening, stating that there was “no place for violence” in France.

The demonstrations drew attention to public anger over the cost of living, but the scale of the disorder shifted much of the focus towards public safety, damage to property and the response of law enforcement. The large turnout across multiple cities underscored the reach of the protests, while the reported injuries and arrests reflected the seriousness of the confrontations.

Euronews compiled 10 photographs capturing the day’s most dramatic scenes, documenting the fires, damaged buildings and clashes that unfolded across France. The images offer a visual record of a day when protests over living costs escalated into widespread disorder.
