Shanti-Som Algarve, a new wellness retreat in southern Portugal, is scheduled to open in February 2027, bringing six structured wellness programmes to a restored 19th-century farmhouse surrounded by orange and almond orchards.

The 22-room property will be set across four hectares of countryside in the Algarve, around a 20-minute drive from Faro Airport. It will be the second retreat operated by Shanti-Som, a wellness brand that opened its first property in Marbella, Spain, in 2011.

Rather than relying solely on high-tech treatments, the new retreat will focus on programmes designed around specific wellness goals, including relaxation, fitness, detox, yoga, Pilates and recovery from burnout. The approach is intended to help guests develop healthy habits they can continue after returning home.

“We see Shanti-Som as a hybrid of a holiday, a private wellness club and a gym,” hotel manager Ophélie Acris said.

“You can switch off completely and be looked after, but you also leave with real, practical ways to feel stronger, healthier and happier.”

Acris said the experience would be adapted to guests’ individual needs, whether they want to improve their sleep, build strength, take time to recover or step away from the pressures of everyday life.

Shanti-Som Algarve will offer six programmes, with strength and fitness and burnout and nervous system recovery introduced as options exclusive to the Portuguese property.

The strength and fitness programme is designed for guests who want to maintain physical strength and support healthy ageing, with particular attention to muscle strength and bone density. Activities will include individual training sessions, reformer Pilates and guided hikes. Participants will also receive a health check and nutritional consultation.

The burnout and nervous system recovery programme will take a different approach, combining breathwork, guided meditation, sound healing and hot-and-cold contrast therapy with life coaching sessions. The programme is intended for guests seeking time away from daily demands while exploring practices that support rest and recovery.

The retreat will also have a dedicated wellness area featuring an infinity pool, sauna, hammam, ice bath and gym. Private treatment rooms will be available for massages and facials, giving guests access to additional relaxation and personal care services during their stay.

All six programmes will include full-board accommodation, and guests will be able to choose how long they stay. This flexible arrangement allows visitors to plan their retreat around their available time and personal priorities.

The property’s location also provides access to some of the Algarve’s coastal attractions. Nearby destinations include Praia da Falésia and Praia da Marinha, two well-known beaches, as well as the Ria Formosa lagoon, a coastal wetland area.

With its combination of a historic rural setting, structured wellness programmes and access to the Algarve’s coastline, Shanti-Som Algarve is preparing to offer an alternative to conventional beach holidays. Its planned February 2027 opening will expand the brand beyond Spain and give travellers another option for a wellness-focused stay in Portugal.
