Prince Harry and Meghan made their first joint public appearance in the United Kingdom since their reported return in August, drawing cheers from well-wishers during a visit to Nottingham on Thursday.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex greeted members of the public, posed for selfies, hugged supporters and accepted flowers as they began a day of engagements with charities supporting young people and local communities. Their programme included organisations working in music, film, sport and efforts to tackle food poverty.
The appearance brought renewed attention to the couple’s position within the British royal family after they stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and moved to California. Their latest visit comes amid continuing questions about the distinction between their private lives and the official responsibilities carried out by working members of the monarchy.
King Charles III, Harry’s father, has made clear that the couple’s status is different from that of working royals. A letter issued last month by the Lord Chamberlain, the most senior official in the Royal Household, said Harry and Meghan should be regarded as private citizens following their decision to stop undertaking representative duties on behalf of the monarch.

The letter also stated that the couple should not be addressed as His or Her Royal Highness, reflecting the arrangements established after their departure from royal duties.
The couple’s relationship with the wider royal family has been strained since their decision to leave Britain. Although they have sought to rebuild relations with Charles, Harry remains estranged from his older brother, Prince William, the heir to the throne.
Harry and Meghan settled in California six years ago after announcing in January 2020 that they would step back as senior members of the royal family. They have since pursued independent professional and commercial activities while raising their children, Archie and Lilibet.
The question of how they could combine royal responsibilities with financial independence was a central issue in their departure. Before her death in 2022, Queen Elizabeth II made clear that a compromise allowing the couple to retain working royal status while pursuing commercial ventures was not an option.
The Lord Chamberlain’s letter last month addressed questions about the couple’s position following their reported relocation to the UK. It said their decision to step away from official representative duties remained in effect and that their resulting financial independence and desire for privacy would continue to be respected.

Working royals carry out official engagements on behalf of the monarch and receive administrative support from the Royal Household. The group includes Charles and Queen Camilla, William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, as well as Princess Anne, Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie. Other members of the extended royal family also undertake official duties.
Harry and Meghan’s Nottingham visit placed them in a public-facing charitable role, even as the Royal Household maintains that they no longer represent the sovereign in an official capacity. Their engagements focused on community organisations and young people, while their warm reception from members of the public offered a visible reminder of the attention that continues to surround the couple.
