Former San Francisco Police Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, 65, and her daughter Katie, 24, were found dead alongside Mannix’s husband, retired police sergeant Kevin Mannix, 68, at their home in Marin County, California, on Sunday, October 11, in what authorities are investigating as a suspected murder-suicide.
Deputies responding to reports of gunfire shortly after 5 p.m. discovered all three inside the residence in the Strawberry area, east of Mill Valley and across the bay from San Francisco. Authorities said there was no known threat to the wider community.

According to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, officers arrived within minutes of receiving the initial call and contacted the person who had first reported the incident. That individual had already left the residence. Investigators secured the area around the home as they began examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew informed department staff of the deaths in a message expressing the agency’s grief. He asked colleagues to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers and said the department’s support services were available to employees affected by the news.
Mannix spent decades serving with the San Francisco Police Department, rising through its ranks to become one of its most senior female officers. In 2018, she was appointed deputy chief of the Field Operations Bureau before taking charge of the Special Operations Bureau in 2019, according to department records.
Her career also broke barriers within the department. Mannix was the first woman to serve on its Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and later became its leader, marking a significant milestone in the department’s history.
Her husband, Kevin Mannix, also served with the San Francisco Police Department for 27 years before retiring in June 2018. The deaths of the couple and their daughter have brought an abrupt end to the lives of a family with longstanding ties to law enforcement.
Authorities had secured the scene for further investigation. Further details about the circumstances leading to the shooting were not provided in the information released about the incident.
