“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Freddie Jackson, who went home to rest last night,” the family said in its statement.

The family remembered Jackson not only for his voice and musical achievements but also for his generosity and the relationships he built throughout his life. They said he deeply loved his fans, relatives and friends, many of whom had supported him throughout his decades in music.

Jackson became one of the recognisable voices of romantic R&B, earning a loyal audience with songs that combined smooth vocals, soulful melodies and lyrics about love and relationships. His best-known recordings include “Rock Me Tonight,” “You Are My Lady,” “Tasty Love,” “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” “Jam Tonight,” “He’ll Never Love You (Like I Do)” and “Do Me Again.”

Born Frederick Anthony Jackson in Harlem, New York, on October 2, 1956, he began his professional music career in the late 1970s with the California-based funk band Mystic Merlin. He later moved into a solo career, a decision that would establish him as one of the prominent male R&B singers of his era.

His major breakthrough came in 1985 with the release of his album “Rock Me Tonight.” The title track became one of his signature songs, while “You Are My Lady” further strengthened his position on the R&B charts. The album achieved platinum status, and his follow-up release, “Just Like the First Time,” also went platinum.

These successes helped establish Jackson as a leading voice in the romantic soul music that found a strong audience during the 1980s. His songs remained familiar to listeners long after their initial release, particularly among fans of classic R&B and adult contemporary music.

Jackson continued recording music in the years that followed, maintaining his connection with audiences through new releases and live performances. His later albums included “Love Signals,” released in 2018, and “My First Love,” released in 2023. Reports of concert appearances as recently as September 2026 indicated that he had remained active as a performer in the later years of his career.

In 2024, Jackson publicly disclosed that he was battling kidney disease. However, his family has not confirmed whether the condition was connected to his death, and no cause of death has been announced.

Following the announcement, his family expressed gratitude to the people who had supported his music over the years, acknowledging the personal connection many listeners felt with his songs.

“To everyone who ever sang along, danced, or felt something when Freddie took the stage: thank you. You were family to him, and he carried your love with him always,” the family said.

The family also asked fans to remember his relatives, friends and loved ones in their prayers. Details of his funeral arrangements and plans to honour his life and musical legacy are expected to be announced later.

Jackson leaves behind a catalogue of songs that became part of the soundtrack to countless love stories. For listeners who grew up with his music, recordings such as “You Are My Lady” and “Rock Me Tonight” remain closely associated with the era in which his voice became a defining presence in R&B.
