Miss South Africa Mia le Roux Steps Back from Miss Universe, Prioritizes Health

Mia le Roux, who was set to represent South Africa at this weekend’s Miss Universe finals in Mexico, has unfortunately withdrawn from the competition due to health issues, as confirmed by event organizers.

The 28-year-old made history earlier this year by becoming the first-ever deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa, following a tumultuous competition marked by controversy, including the withdrawal of a finalist who faced online abuse related to her Nigerian heritage.

Having spent several weeks in Mexico preparing for the prestigious event, Le Roux was among the 120 contestants competing for the coveted Miss Universe title. However, in a statement from the Miss South Africa organization, it was revealed that her health and well-being are the top priorities, and they will continue to support her as she focuses on her recovery.

Her last-minute decision to step down means that South Africa will not have a representative at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant. Reflecting on her difficult decision, Le Roux shared, “It has been an incredibly tough choice, knowing how many dreams and hopes have been invested in me. However, I’m deeply thankful for the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery, so that I can serve my country with full strength in the future.”

While she has not revealed the specifics of her health condition, the Miss South Africa organization praised her bravery during this challenging time. “Mia has shown remarkable courage and dignity throughout this period,” they stated. “Our hearts are with her as she takes the necessary steps toward healing.”

Just last month, Le Roux had expressed her excitement about the opportunity to represent South Africa on the Miss Universe stage, describing it as a “once-in-a-lifetime chance for my voice to be heard.” She had hoped to use the platform to highlight her country’s “beautiful diversity.”

Diagnosed with profound hearing loss at just one year old, Le Roux uses a cochlear implant to help her perceive sound. In past interviews, she has shared that it took two years of speech therapy before she was able to speak her first words, reflecting on the challenges she has overcome with resilience and determination.
