Osas Ighodaro made a strong case for sculptural fashion at the BellaNaija at 20 Grand Red Carpet Experience, interpreting the High Fashion Icon theme through an elaborate ivory and gold gown, intricate African hair artistry and carefully chosen jewellery.
At first glance, the look is defined by its colour. Look closer and the construction begins to emerge. The strapless corset, the oversized fan-shaped skirt and the architectural hairstyle each bring a different element to the outfit, creating a red carpet appearance that becomes more detailed the longer it is viewed.
The gown features a strapless sweetheart neckline corset in rich ivory fabric, decorated with gilded floral scrollwork and subtle crystal details along the boning lines. The fitted upper half gives the dress a defined structure before opening dramatically at the waist.
The skirt is where the silhouette becomes particularly striking. Structured ivory panels fan outward from the centre, forming an exaggerated inverted-heart shape. Thin metallic gold stripes run across the fabric, while the hem is finished with dense golden beadwork and clustered embellishments. The combination of pleating, embroidery and beading gives the skirt considerable depth without introducing a wide range of colours.
The restricted palette of ivory and gold also allows the construction of the dress to remain the focus. Instead of relying on multiple colours or competing prints, the gown uses texture, shape and surface detail to create visual interest.
Stylist Makililo Nelson A completed the look with a hairstyle that was almost as architectural as the dress itself. Osas wore a traditional threaded hairstyle created with black thread and gold wire, shaped into geometric knots above a neat, straight-cut fringe. The angular lines of the hair echoed the structured form of the gown while maintaining its own identity.
That connection between the hair and the dress is one of the more distinctive aspects of the styling. The black thread introduces contrast against the ivory fabric, while the gold wire connects visually with the metallic embroidery and embellishments on the gown. Her makeup remained warm and defined. Bronze eyeshadow, liquid eyeliner and a glossy lip kept the beauty look polished without overwhelming the clothing. Gold and pearl cluster drop earrings framed her face, while a large cushion-cut yellow gemstone ring introduced another strong detail to the otherwise controlled colour palette.
