Veekee James arrived at the BellaNaija at 20 Grand Red Carpet Experience in a custom oxblood leather coat-gown by Abbas Woman, turning the night’s High Fashion Icon dress code into a study in sharp tailoring, dramatic proportions and controlled styling.
The Nigerian fashion designer chose a floor-length leather silhouette styled by Baudovin Ononiba for the celebration, which marked 20 years of BellaNaija. Rather than relying on embellishment, the look made its impact through its sculpted shape, deep colour and exaggerated proportions.
The coat-gown was built around a defined hourglass silhouette, with padded shoulders and exaggerated peplum hips creating a strong contrast between the upper and lower half of the design. A plunging lapel gave the front a clean tailored finish, while subtle button fastenings kept the construction relatively restrained.

Further down, the leather piece opened into a high central slit, revealing a floor-length train beneath it. The combination gave the outfit movement while preserving the structured shape of the coat-gown.
Veekee kept the rest of the outfit deliberately dark. A fitted black turtleneck sat underneath the leather design, with sleeves that extended into thumbhole openings and covered part of her hands. The styling allowed the oxblood leather to remain the dominant element without introducing competing colours.
The accessories added another layer of drama. An oversized black hat with an ultra-wide brim was tilted low over her brows, while a dark clutch finished with long beaded fringe brought texture to the otherwise sharply tailored look. Chunky gold hoop earrings provided a small contrast, and pointed black heels completed the silhouette.

Her beauty styling stayed within the same visual direction. Winged eyeliner and a warm-toned lip kept the makeup polished without pulling attention away from the clothing, particularly the oversized hat and sculptural leather coat-gown.
The choice of oxblood also gave the outfit a richer alternative to the more expected black leather look. Against the dark styling, the deep red-brown shade allowed the main piece to stand out while maintaining the dramatic mood of the ensemble.
For an event built around the theme of High Fashion Icon, the look was closely aligned with the occasion. Veekee James, who is herself a prominent figure in Nigeria’s fashion industry, arrived not simply in a statement outfit but in a design built around proportion, structure and presence.
The BellaNaija at 20 Grand Red Carpet Experience brought together fashion and entertainment figures to celebrate two decades of BellaNaija, a platform that has become closely associated with African fashion, entertainment and pop culture. For Veekee James, the evening provided an opportunity to approach the anniversary theme through a highly sculptural look that placed the clothing firmly at the centre of attention.
