Moomin mug collectors have pushed the value of one of Finland’s most sought-after ceramics to a new level, with a rare test version of Arabia’s Diving with Shells mug selling for EUR46,023.
The sale is believed to be a new world record for a single Moomin mug. The cup was sold by Finnish Moomin collectibles specialist Muumimukit Rahaksi in a closed auction held in late 2025, where five bidders offered more than EUR40,000. The transaction was completed in April this year.
The buyer, who has chosen to remain anonymous, is a long-time Moomin collector from another Nordic country and an existing customer of the company, according to Muumimukit Rahaksi CEO Rasmus Rantanen.
The mug’s extraordinary price is largely explained by how few were ever made. It was produced as a test version of the Diving summer mug that Arabia released in 2006, but its design included additional shell and coral decorations that did not appear on the final production model.

The design was abandoned shortly before full-scale production began. Only a very small test batch is believed to have been manufactured, with around 10 examples thought to have been produced and distributed to employees at the Arabia factory.
For collectors, that scarcity makes the Diving with Shells mug one of the hardest Moomin mugs to find. Its market value has also climbed rapidly in recent years.
Muumimukit Rahaksi sold one example for just under EUR9,000 in 2019. Two years later, another was sold at auction in Sweden for 236,478 Swedish kronor, equivalent to roughly EUR23,000 at the time.
The latest sale has therefore nearly doubled the previous publicly reported record, showing how dramatically prices for the rarest Moomin collectibles can rise when an exceptionally scarce piece enters the market.
Moomin mugs have developed into a distinctive part of Finnish collecting culture. Moomin designs first appeared on Arabia tableware in the 1950s, while the modern series of collectible mugs has used Kaj Franck’s Teema mug design since the 1990s.
While many Moomin mugs remain affordable everyday items, limited and discontinued editions can command prices many times higher than their original retail value. The 2004 Fazer mug is another example. Only 400 numbered production pieces were made, while Muumimukit Rahaksi reported that an unnumbered factory spare sold for EUR20,000 in early 2025.
The latest record sale comes as interest in the history and collecting of Moomin mugs is also receiving attention in the museum world.
Tampere’s Moomin Museum opened its new Moomin Mug Mania exhibition on September 26, bringing together objects that explore the history of the mugs, their significance to collectors and the personal meanings attached to them.
Among the items on display is another privately owned Diving with Shells mug. For visitors, it offers an unusual chance to see in person a small piece of Finnish design history that has become one of the country’s most valuable collectible ceramics.
For most people, a Moomin mug remains something to drink coffee or tea from. For a small group of collectors, however, the rarest examples have become highly valuable objects in their own right. The EUR46,023 sale shows just how far that collecting market has developed.
