Europe’s most popular castles and palaces for 2026 are led by Prague Castle, with some of the continent’s best-known royal residences and historic fortresses also featuring prominently in a new ranking based on Google reviews.
The ranking, compiled by travel company TUI Musement, comes as interest in history, culture and heritage remains a significant part of European travel. Research from the European Travel Commission indicates that cultural and heritage experiences are among the motivations shaping travel plans as the autumn season approaches.
TUI Musement’s own research points in the same direction. It found that 94 percent of respondents are interested or very interested in experiences connected with history, culture and heritage during their next city break. Eight in 10 also said they had visited a monument or landmark close to where they live.
Using accumulated Google review data, TUI Musement compared the 30 most reviewed castles and palaces in Europe in 2023 and 2026, looking at how the attractions had moved within the ranking over that period.
Prague Castle remains at the top. The Czech capital’s vast historic complex had accumulated around 199,000 Google reviews, an increase of 31 percent compared with 2023. The site brings several major landmarks together, including St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and Golden Lane, making it less a single attraction than a collection of historic spaces within one of Europe’s most recognisable capitals.
Buckingham Palace takes second place. The London residence remains one of the most recognisable symbols of the British monarchy and attracts visitors who come to see the Changing of the Guard as well as those able to visit its state rooms during the summer opening period.
Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna has moved into third place, climbing two positions from its 2023 ranking. The former imperial residence offers a very different kind of experience, centred on the Habsburg dynasty and the political and cultural history of Austria. Its gardens and interiors have helped make it one of Vienna’s defining landmarks.
Fourth place goes to the Palace of Versailles in France, another attraction whose name is closely tied to European political history. Once the residence of the French monarchy, Versailles is known for the Hall of Mirrors, royal apartments and extensive gardens. Its history stretches from the era of Louis XIV through the French Revolution and later events, including the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.
Poland’s Wawel Castle comes fifth. Although it has slipped two places since 2023, the Krakow landmark remains one of the country’s most important cultural sites. Wawel served as a royal residence and coronation site for Polish monarchs, while the Dragon’s Den and its associated legend have become closely associated with the city.
Spain has two attractions in the next two positions. The Alhambra in Granada ranks sixth, bringing together palaces, gardens and fortifications that reflect the centuries of Muslim and Christian rule in southern Spain. The Nasrid Palaces, Generalife, Alcazaba and Palace of Charles V are among the complex’s best-known features.
The Royal Palace of Madrid follows in seventh place. It has moved up one position since 2023, with its accumulated Google reviews increasing by 47 percent. Although the palace continues to be used for official royal functions, visitors can explore rooms and collections including the Throne Room, Gasparini Room and Royal Chapel.
The Tower of London occupies eighth place. Few European castles carry quite the same mixture of royal history, imprisonment, executions and legend. The fortress is closely associated with events including the execution of Anne Boleyn and the disappearance of Edward V and his younger brother, the Duke of York. Today, its most famous attraction is the Crown Jewels, while Yeoman Warders and the tower’s resident ravens have become part of its enduring identity.
Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria ranks ninth and has benefited from a notable rise in Google reviews. Its dramatic setting and romantic architecture have helped turn the castle into one of Germany’s most recognisable landmarks. Built for King Ludwig II of Bavaria, it reflects his fascination with medieval themes, art and architecture and has become closely associated with the fairy-tale image of the Bavarian Alps.
Completing the top 10 is Bran Castle in Romania, widely promoted as Dracula’s Castle. The connection with Bram Stoker’s fictional vampire has made the Transylvanian fortress particularly attractive to visitors interested in Gothic history and folklore. But the castle’s story extends well beyond Dracula, with a history that includes its role as a frontier fortress and later use as a royal residence.
Spain has the largest representation in the wider 30-place ranking, with six castles and palaces included. The country also places both the Alhambra and Royal Palace of Madrid among the top 10.
One of the most notable movements in the wider list is Buda Castle in Budapest, the only new entry, after its accumulated Google reviews increased by 65 percent compared with 2023.
The figures do not measure which castle travellers consider the most beautiful or historically important. They reflect the volume of Google reviews and changes in that volume, making the ranking more a measure of visitor attention than a definitive judgement on the quality of the attractions.
Still, the list offers a useful snapshot of the European landmarks continuing to draw travellers’ interest in 2026. It also shows how broadly that interest is spread, from royal palaces in London, Madrid and Vienna to medieval fortresses in Krakow and Transylvania and the romantic castles of Bavaria.
For travellers planning an autumn city break, the appeal of these places is not simply their architecture. They offer a way into the histories of the cities and countries around them, often compressing centuries of political change, royal ambition, conflict and cultural life into a single visit.
