Finland to introduce green number plates for all taxis from 2027
Finland will introduce green number plates for taxis from 2027 as part of tighter regulation of the taxi industry. The new plates will have a green background with black registration numbers, making taxis easier to identify.

The change will apply to all taxis operating in Finland, including vehicles booked through ride-hailing platforms.

The new system will officially begin on 1 January 2027, but taxi operators will have six months to make the change. From 1 July 2027, all taxis will be required to use the new green plates.

Taxis will also have to display a taxi sign on the roof, giving passengers another clear way to identify an authorised taxi.

Another major change concerns taximeters. From February 2027, taximeters will be required in all vehicles used for taxi services.

The new requirements come as Finland increases oversight of a sector that has faced concerns about pricing, passenger safety and service quality since the taxi market was liberalised in 2018.

Further changes took effect on 1 September 2026. Taxi drivers must now give passengers clear information about the fare before the journey starts. Authorities have also increased scrutiny of taxi drivers’ criminal backgrounds as part of efforts to improve passenger safety.

The changes mark a move towards tighter controls after several years of a more open taxi market. For passengers, the most visible change will be the green registration plates, which will eventually make taxis easier to recognise across Finland.
