Teenager Arrested After Fire Devastates Historic Big Mill in Leek

The Big Mill fire Leek erupted late Friday night, leaving one of Staffordshire’s historic landmarks in ruins and prompting an 18-year-old man’s arrest on suspicion of arson with reckless endangerment. The blaze consumed the six-storey Grade II-listed building on Mill Street, forcing residents to evacuate and drawing a major emergency response.

Authorities reported the fire broke out at approximately 9:22pm. Flames spread quickly through the structure, which had stood since 1857 and once housed a significant silk manufacturing operation. Though the building had been empty for years, it held planning permission for conversion into residential flats, giving it new relevance for the community. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed crews remained on-site into Saturday, struggling to access parts of the building due to safety concerns. Station Manager Jonathan Ashby explained that while the fire was under control, full extinguishment could take hours because of unstable floors and extensive structural damage.

Drone footage captured flames engulfing the entire building as portions of the structure collapsed. Firefighters deployed multiple units, including an aerial ladder platform, to combat the inferno. Roads around the site, including the A523 Mill Street, were closed, and the public was urged to avoid the area. The cordon remained substantial, reflecting the ongoing risk to both emergency crews and bystanders.

Local residents described witnessing the fire as harrowing. One eyewitness said, “Can’t believe we came across it as one of the first, shaking like a leaf, horrific. The noise was awful.” The suddenness of the blaze, coupled with the historic nature of the building, heightened concern for community safety and the preservation of Leek’s architectural heritage.

Police have appealed for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area to come forward to aid the investigation. The teenager in custody faces questioning as authorities continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fire, including whether it was deliberately set or resulted from reckless behavior.

The Big Mill fire Leek represents not only the loss of a physical structure but also the erasure of a tangible link to Leek’s industrial past. As the investigation unfolds, officials face the dual challenge of ensuring public safety and assessing the feasibility of salvaging what remains of the building’s historic features.
