Trump Halts Planned Strikes on Iranian Power Plants Amid Diplomatic Talks

Trump halts strikes on Iran after days of tense escalation, announcing a temporary pause on military action targeting Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure. The move comes as Washington and Tehran engaged in “in-depth, detailed, and constructive” discussions aimed at resolving hostilities in the Middle East.

In a statement posted on his platform, Trump described the conversations over the past two days as “very good and productive,” emphasizing that the five-day suspension of strikes is conditional on the success of ongoing meetings. He wrote that the talks would continue through the week and instructed the Department of War to hold off on any military operations targeting Iran’s energy facilities.

This announcement represents a significant shift from Trump’s previous stance. Just days earlier, he issued an ultimatum demanding that Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours or face immediate strikes on its power infrastructure. Iran responded by warning that any U.S. attack could trigger destruction of oil facilities and other strategic infrastructure across the Middle East in ways it described as irreversible.

The strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz has become central to the standoff. Traffic through the waterway has been heavily restricted since late February, when combined U.S.-Israeli strikes prompted Iranian retaliatory attacks on commercial and energy vessels. These attacks disrupted exports of crude oil, LNG, fertilizers, and other commodities, intensifying economic and geopolitical pressures across the region.

Iran’s Defence Council reinforced its warnings, stating that any aggression on Iranian coasts or islands could lead Tehran to lay naval mines across the Gulf. State media noted that such a move could make the wider Gulf resemble the restricted conditions of the Strait of Hormuz for an extended period. Tehran has also indicated that the strait would only allow passage to vessels from countries it considers non-belligerent and willing to coordinate movements with Iranian authorities.

Analysts see Trump’s pause as a tactical decision to maintain leverage while continuing diplomatic engagement. The five-day halt allows both sides to explore potential avenues for de-escalation without immediate military confrontation, though the broader risk to regional energy routes and geopolitical stability remains high.

The coming days will test whether these discussions can produce a lasting resolution or whether tensions will quickly return to the brink. For now, the temporary pause marks a rare window for cautious diplomacy in one of the world’s most volatile regions.
