Saudi Arabia Expels Iranian Diplomats Amid Alleged Attacks

Saudi Arabia expels Iranian diplomats after accusing Iran of repeated attacks that undermine regional stability and contradict Islamic brotherhood. The move marks a serious escalation in tensions between the two Gulf powers.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Iran targeted Saudi territory, civilians, economic assets, and diplomatic premises. In a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency, the ministry described the attacks as “a flagrant violation of all relevant international conventions, the principles of good neighborliness, and respect for states’ sovereignty.”

The ministry also highlighted that Iran’s actions breach international agreements, including the Beijing Agreement and UN Security Council Resolution No. 2817. Officials stressed that Tehran’s frequent references to Islamic principles are not reflected in its actions. “These are merely words not reflected by actions,” the statement said, emphasizing the contrast between rhetoric and reality.

In response, Saudi Arabia declared five Iranian diplomats persona non grata. The expelled officials included the military attaché and the assistant military attaché. They were ordered to leave the kingdom within 24 hours. Saudi authorities warned that Iran’s behavior could have “significant consequences” for diplomatic and economic relations, signaling potential long-term strain.

The kingdom reaffirmed its right to self-defense under international law. Officials stated that Saudi Arabia “will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to preserve its sovereignty, safeguard its security, and protect its territory, airspace, citizens, residents, resources, and interests,” citing Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

The expulsion comes amid a rise in missile and drone attacks across the Gulf, linked to Iranian-backed groups. These incidents have heightened concerns about regional instability and drawn attention from global powers including the United States and Israel. Analysts say the decision reflects Saudi Arabia’s growing determination to assert its position and protect its interests in a volatile environment.

The action also underscores the fragility of Riyadh-Tehran relations. By taking a firm stance, Saudi Arabia is signaling that continued aggression will have tangible consequences. Observers note that the diplomatic fallout may reshape alliances and security arrangements in the Gulf in the coming months.
