Pygmy hippopotamus Moo Deng drew global attention again after a man was arrested for climbing into her enclosure at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi Province, Thailand. The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 17, around 5:00 p.m., according to a statement from the zoo.

Authorities say the man, a Thai national, took advantage of a moment when zoo staff were performing evening duties to enter the restricted area. Security footage reviewed by the Bangkok Post shows him filming or photographing Moo Deng and her mother Jona on a tablet before climbing out. Both animals were unharmed, and there was no physical contact.

The zoo’s director, Narongwit Chodchoy, confirmed to the Associated Press that the man was initially charged with trespassing but has since been released on bail. “He did not attempt to touch the animals, and both Moo Deng and Jona are safe,” Chodchoy said.

Autthapol Nundee, known as Benz, Moo Deng’s keeper, reassured the public on Facebook that “fortunately, he did not get bitten.” The zoo emphasized that the pygmy hippos’ welfare remains a priority, and the veterinary team will monitor their behavior closely in the coming days.

Moo Deng first gained international attention in September 2024 when videos of her at Khao Kheow Open Zoo went viral. Since then, she has become a beloved figure, attracting both local visitors and international tourists.

In their Facebook statement, the zoo expressed gratitude to the public for reporting suspicious activity and for showing concern for the animals. Staff warned that visitors must strictly follow rules and instructions to ensure the safety of both humans and wildlife. The zoo added that any risky behavior would result in legal action without exception.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenge zoos face in balancing public access with animal safety, particularly for species that have become social media sensations. While Moo Deng remains safe, the event serves as a reminder of the potential dangers posed by unmonitored interactions.
