Pregnant woman gunned down South Africa: two gang members have been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing 21-year-old Shahida Nathan, who was eight months pregnant at the time, in a violent shooting in Scottsdene, Kraaifontein. Alongside life sentences, both Jeremia Fortuin and Ricardo Cloete received additional prison terms totaling over 100 years each for the attempted murder of six others.
The Western Cape High Court found both men, linked to the Ferodo gang, guilty of one of the most shocking acts of gang violence in the region in recent years. Prosecutors detailed how Fortuin and Cloete opened fire on a shack in June 2020, intending to target rival gang members. Nathan and six others were inside, sharing a meal and talking, unaware of the approaching attackers. The attack left Nathan dead and two men aged 29 and 37 seriously injured.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Eric Ntabazalila explained that Fortuin and Cloete had been pursuing Mobster gang members Alfredo Titus and Ridwaan Smith. Believing the two were in the shack, Cloete pointed it out to Fortuin, who was armed with an illegal firearm. Fortuin fired multiple rounds into the structure, then both men fled the scene, leaving Nathan fatally wounded.
During the trial, both accused denied involvement. Fortuin claimed intoxication after a party in Klapmuts the night before, while Cloete said he had been using drugs and woke up later that morning. The court rejected their statements, ruling that the state had proven their guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Hearsay evidence, including statements from two deceased witnesses, was admitted as part of the case.
Fortuin was convicted on ten charges, including murder, six counts of attempted murder, gang membership, and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He received life imprisonment for murder plus additional sentences totaling 107 years. Cloete, convicted on similar charges but excluding the firearm and ammunition counts, received life imprisonment plus 96 years. The court ordered that the additional sentences run concurrently with the life sentences.
Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Nicolette Bell praised the investigation and prosecution team for their work, noting that these sentences removed two dangerous criminals from the community. The case highlights the continued threat of gang violence in the Western Cape and the devastating impact it has on innocent civilians.
The Scottsdene community, like many others affected by gang violence, continues to grapple with fear and loss, showing the urgent need for sustained law enforcement and social interventions to prevent such tragedies from repeating.
