A Nigerian footballer hospitalised after a knife attack in Lithuania has left the local football community shaken. Chinonso Jeremiah Obi, 20, from Lagos, was critically injured in an assault tied to racial motives while preparing for a First League match with his club, FK Dainava.

Obi was walking to join his team’s travel to Tauragė on Tuesday morning, March 17, 2026, when he was attacked near an apartment building on Naujoji Street in Alytus. The assailant, a teenage male born in 2007, stabbed Obi from behind, striking his stomach, arm, and buttocks. Passersby intervened and the attacker was detained by the club’s administrator before authorities arrived. Obi was rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
FK Dainava responded immediately on social media, condemning the attack and expressing shock at the violence directed at one of its players. The club also announced the postponement of the scheduled match against Taurus in Tauragė. “What happened today is incomprehensible and unforgivable. Our football player has become a victim of a serious crime – he was attacked with a knife and is currently in hospital, his condition is serious,” the club said in a statement.
The Lithuanian Football Federation weighed in, calling the incident racism-related and highlighting the broader implications for player safety. Federation President Edgaras Stankevičius said, “Racism has no place in football or society. Every player, regardless of nationality, skin color, or origin, must feel safe and do what they do best – delight fans in stadiums. Football around the world must be a unifying force, not a divisive one.”
The football community in Alytus has rallied around Obi, while the authorities have taken the attacker into custody. FK Dainava hopes for a full recovery for Obi and that the perpetrator receives the strictest legal consequences. The attack underscores ongoing concerns about racism in European football and the urgent need to ensure safe environments for players from diverse backgrounds.
