Queen Camilla reportedly told a friend that Meghan Markle had “brainwashed” Prince Harry, according to claims in a new book by investigative author Tom Bower. The remark is said to have come in the early stages of tension within the British royal family, shortly after Harry and Meghan’s 2018 wedding at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.
While the wedding and honeymoon seemed celebratory to the public, Bower’s book suggests that divisions were already forming behind palace walls. Relations between Harry, Meghan, and the wider family allegedly deteriorated soon after the couple returned from their Mediterranean honeymoon. Bower claims a heated argument occurred between Harry and his older brother, Prince William, which escalated during a family dispute. During the confrontation, Meghan reportedly responded sharply to William, saying: “If you don’t mind, get your finger out of my face.”
Following the incident, Queen Camilla is said to have expressed frustration privately, telling a friend that Meghan had “brainwashed” Harry. Bower also reports that William had previously cautioned Harry about the rapid pace of the relationship, reportedly saying: “It’s gone too quickly.” Princess Catherine is claimed to have shared similar concerns, worried that Harry might be especially influenced by Meghan.
The book further suggests that Harry and Meghan felt constrained within the royal hierarchy, believing they would always occupy a secondary role behind the direct heirs to the throne. These tensions ultimately led to their decision to step back from royal duties in 2020. The couple relocated to the United States and began speaking publicly about their experiences, including a widely watched 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey and Harry’s 2023 memoir, Spare.
Despite years of strained relations, media reports indicate potential opportunities for reconciliation. One possibility includes Harry inviting his father, King Charles III, to open the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.
Meanwhile, Meghan Markle has continued to pursue business ventures following the end of her collaboration between her lifestyle brand, As Ever, and the streaming platform Netflix. Her team has confirmed that the brand will continue independently with upcoming projects and events in the works.
