CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup Prize Money Set to Surge Under Motsepe

CAF Champions League prize money has reached a new milestone under the leadership of Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football. Motsepe has confirmed a $2 million increase for the winners of Africa’s premier club competitions, marking a significant boost in financial rewards for the continent’s top football clubs.

The victor of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League will now earn $6 million, a 50 percent increase from previous seasons. Meanwhile, the winner of the CAF Confederation Cup will take home $4 million, doubling the previous prize. These adjustments reflect a broader strategy to strengthen club football across Africa and provide tangible incentives for success at the continental level.

Since assuming office five years ago, Motsepe has overseen a remarkable rise in prize money. CAF Champions League winners previously received $2.5 million, meaning the current $6 million reward represents a 140 percent increase. Confederation Cup winners have seen an even sharper climb, from $1.25 million to $4 million, an increase of 220 percent.

Overall, CAF’s prize money and solidarity payments now exceed $42 million per season, more than doubling the financial support distributed to African clubs when Motsepe took office. In comparison, CAF allocated $18.8 million in total cash prizes for clubs in 2021. These figures illustrate a deliberate push to elevate African club competitions to new levels of professionalism and competitiveness.

Analysts suggest that this financial growth not only incentivizes better performance on the pitch but also has long-term implications for African football. Clubs with larger budgets can invest in facilities, youth development, and player acquisitions, potentially narrowing the gap with European leagues. Motsepe’s strategy signals a vision for CAF that combines financial empowerment with football development, a model that may reshape the continent’s club landscape in the years to come.

The increase in prize money marks one of the most substantial financial overhauls in African football in recent decades, underscoring CAF’s commitment to rewarding excellence and fostering sustainable growth for its member clubs.
