23 Players Shown Red Card After Mass Brawl in Brazilian Football Final

23 players shown red card in one of the most chaotic moments in Brazilian football unfolded after the Campeonato Mineiro final between Cruzeiro and Atletico Mineiro. The match, which should have been remembered for the competition itself, instead became defined by a mass brawl that left nearly half of both squads dismissed.

Cruzeiro secured a 1–0 victory over Atletico Mineiro in Belo Horizonte, claiming their first Minas Gerais state title since 2019. The decisive goal came from Kaio Jorge, whose strike provided the margin for victory under the management of former Brazil national team coach Tite.

The triumph, however, was overshadowed in the final minutes when tensions erupted into violence. The confrontation began after Atletico goalkeeper Everson collided with Cruzeiro midfielder Christian while chasing a loose ball. In a moment captured across Brazilian media, Everson pushed Christian to the ground and pressed his knee into the player’s chest.

Christian’s teammates immediately responded, confronting Everson and pushing him against the goalpost. The situation escalated as additional players from both teams entered the fray. Security personnel intervened, but the melee had grown too large to control. Referee Matheus Delgado Candancan was unable to issue red cards during play. Brazilian outlet Globo later reported that 23 players were retrospectively sent off due to the scale of the confrontation.

Cruzeiro had 12 players dismissed, including goalscorer Kaio Jorge. Atletico Mineiro lost 11 players, among them former Atletico Madrid and Nottingham Forest defender Renan Lodi and ex-Brazil international Hulk. Speaking after the match, Hulk condemned the incident, emphasizing the wider implications for football’s image. “It’s regrettable,” he said. “We cannot set that example because it ends up having repercussions all around the world. We have a responsibility to safeguard our image and the image of the institution.”

The violent incident casts a shadow over both teams, who have struggled in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A this season. After four matches, Atletico Mineiro sits 17th in the standings, while Cruzeiro is positioned 19th. Analysts suggest that such disruptions could deepen the challenges both clubs face in maintaining player discipline and team cohesion.

The unprecedented number of dismissals in a single match raises concerns for the league’s disciplinary standards and public image. Football experts argue that the incident underscores systemic issues around player conduct and match management in high-stakes encounters. Clubs and officials will likely face scrutiny as authorities evaluate sanctions and preventive measures to avoid repeat events.
