Iran Denies Drone Attack on US Embassy in Riyadh as Gulf Tensions Escalate

Iran denies drone attack on US embassy in Riyadh, asserting it had no role in the incident as regional tensions surge across the Gulf. The claim comes after Saudi authorities accused Tehran of deploying drones against the diplomatic compound, a charge Iran has consistently rejected. Alireza Enayati, Iran’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, emphasized that Tehran does not engage in covert attacks without openly acknowledging responsibility.

Saudi Arabia has repeatedly accused Iran of missile and drone strikes targeting its territory and has warned it reserves the right to defend itself. Previous incidents include alleged drone attacks on the Ras Tanura Refinery, one of the largest oil facilities in the Middle East. Iran dismissed these claims, maintaining that it was not involved in operations that sparked fires or disrupted energy production. Enayati reiterated that Iran had no involvement in the attack on the US embassy compound, stating that any military action carried out by Tehran would be openly claimed.

The incident comes amid heightened instability in the region following reports that a joint United States and Israeli strike killed a senior Iranian leader. Tehran responded with retaliatory operations targeting Israeli and regional sites, resulting in civilian and military casualties. According to multiple reports, at least 13 people have died since the weekend strikes began, including seven civilians.

Despite the growing violence, Enayati stressed that Iran is not seeking a broader regional conflict. He described the situation as imposed on the Gulf, not initiated by Tehran, and insisted the country has no intention of expanding the confrontation into a war. Before the recent escalation, Riyadh had supported diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran, asserting that Saudi territory and airspace would not be used for attacks against Iran.

Iran has publicly welcomed this position, highlighting the role of Saudi restraint in maintaining stability. Enayati said, “We appreciate what we have repeatedly heard from Saudi Arabia — that it does not allow its airspace, waters, or territory to be used against the Islamic Republic of Iran. We welcome and affirm this position.”

Diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia were restored in March 2023 after a breakthrough agreement brokered by China, ending years of severed ties. The two countries had cut relations in 2016 after Saudi diplomatic missions in Tehran and Mashhad were attacked during protests following the execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

The latest events underscore the fragile security balance in the Gulf. While Iran continues retaliatory operations in response to foreign strikes, the leadership signals a desire to avoid full-scale regional escalation. Analysts note that Saudi restraint and continued diplomatic engagement may prevent further destabilization, but the situation remains unpredictable. The coming weeks will likely determine whether diplomacy can curb rising tensions or if the Gulf faces a deeper period of instability.
