Vantaa fire claimed the lives of five members of the same Somali family early Tuesday, leaving a newborn in hospital with serious injuries. Authorities are investigating the blaze as a suspected case of arson, with five counts of murder and aggravated arson under review.

Emergency services received the alarm at 5.41 a.m. for a building fire on Pähkinärinteentie in the Pähkinärinne district in west Vantaa. Firefighters quickly contained the flames, but the damage was extensive. Rescue crews, paramedics, and police remained at the scene through the morning.
The victims included parents in their thirties and forties and three children aged three, six, and eight. A baby, only days old, survived and was rushed to hospital with critical injuries. Police confirmed the five deceased were discovered in the stairwell as they attempted to leave their third-floor flat amid thick smoke.
“The smoke was heavy, and the stairwell was not passable,” said Mikael Backlund, commissioner with Eastern Uusimaa Police, during a press briefing. No external injuries were found on the victims.
Investigators say the fire began in a second-floor flat, where the damage was worst. The building’s rear façade remains blackened, and several upper-floor windows were broken during rescue operations.
Police have detained a Finnish-born man in his seventies who lived in the same building. Detective Chief Inspector Sanna Rentola, leading the investigation, said the suspect has no significant criminal record. She confirmed the offenses under investigation include aggravated arson and murder.
Authorities emphasized that the Somali family was not specifically targeted. “The family was not the target any more than any other resident in the building,” Rentola said. The suspect reportedly approached police at the scene but had not yet been formally interviewed at the time of the statement.
Investigators have not released details about how the fire was set, but preliminary technical assessments indicate it was deliberately started. Officials have ruled out a racist motive.
In addition to the five fatalities, four other residents sustained injuries. One person remains in serious condition, and three others suffered minor injuries.
The city has provided discussion support in local schools and nurseries for students, staff, and families affected by the incident. Emergency accommodation and psychosocial support have also been offered through the Vantaa and Kerava wellbeing services.
Hämeenkylä parish scheduled a memorial service at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the local church, which will remain open for reflection. Members of the Somali community have gathered at area mosques to mourn the victims. Police continue to secure the building while the investigation remains ongoing.
