US Submarine Sinks Iranian Warship in First Attack of Its Kind Since World War II

US military forces sank an Iranian warship, the IRIS Dena, in what officials describe as the first time a United States submarine has destroyed an enemy vessel with a torpedo since World War II. The incident occurred about 25 miles off the coast of Sri Lanka, where the heavily armed frigate exploded and went down after being struck. The vessel carried a range of weaponry, including heavy guns, missiles, torpedoes, and had the capacity to launch helicopters.

Footage released by the United States Department of War shows a massive explosion ripping through part of the ship as the torpedo hit. Sri Lankan authorities responded to distress signals from the vessel and launched a rescue operation. Thirty-two sailors were pulled from the water, with one in critical condition and seven others receiving emergency medical care. More than 100 crew members are still unaccounted for. Local officials in Sri Lanka estimate that at least 80 people were killed in the attack.

The IRIS Dena had been returning to Iran following participation in a joint naval exercise off India’s eastern coast. The strike was highlighted by US officials, including Pete Hegseth, who described it as a key milestone in the ongoing conflict. Hegseth called the attack a “Quiet Death,” noting that this was the first enemy ship sunk by a US torpedo in over 75 years. He emphasized that the United States was engaged in the conflict with a determination similar to the wartime period when the War Department oversaw such operations.

This action is part of a broader escalation. The US military has stated that 17 Iranian vessels have already been destroyed since the conflict began and indicated that its objective is to neutralize Iran’s naval capabilities. The attack comes in the wake of heightened tensions across the Middle East following the killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei during joint US-Israel strikes. In response, Iran launched retaliatory attacks targeting US military and diplomatic installations in the region, including locations in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

In Dubai, a drone strike near the United States Consulate caused a fire in a parking area but did not result in any injuries. Senator Marco Rubio confirmed that the drone struck a car park adjacent to the chancery building and that all personnel were safe. He noted that the United States had already begun reducing staff at diplomatic facilities in the region prior to the strike, reflecting the growing concern over escalating hostilities.

The sinking of the IRIS Dena marks a significant turning point in the conflict and demonstrates the increasing reach and lethality of US naval operations. Analysts note that this event signals not only a tactical achievement but also a warning about the intensifying naval confrontation in the Indian Ocean. The full implications for regional stability remain uncertain, but the incident underscores how quickly military engagements can escalate far from the immediate theater of conflict.
