Kevin Spacey Sexual Abuse Case: Civil Claim Spanning 50 Years

Kevin Spacey sexual abuse allegations have resurfaced as the actor faces a new civil lawsuit in the High Court, with claims dating back nearly fifty years. The 66-year-old American actor is being sued by three men who say he abused his position in Hollywood to prey on young men, beginning years before his career became public.

The court heard that Spacey’s alleged first incident occurred in 1976 while he was a student at Chatsworth High School in Los Angeles. A male driver claims the actor groped him, and he is one of seven witnesses expected to give evidence in the civil claim for damages, which is scheduled to be heard later this year. Spacey has denied all allegations.

This civil case follows his 2023 acquittal at Southwark Crown Court, where he was cleared of multiple predatory sexual offences allegedly committed during his tenure as artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre in London. Some of the men now pursuing damages had previously filed compensation claims exceeding £30,000 before the criminal trial.

Elizabeth-Anne Gumbel KC, representing the three men, told the court during a pre-trial review that Spacey allegedly exploited his celebrity status to groom young men. She said the actor would attempt inappropriate touching or kissing, and in some cases, pressured victims to touch him. Gifts were sometimes given to create trust, and the assaults were described as sudden and unexpected.

Spacey did not attend the High Court for this session. He has previously admitted to “bad behaviour” and being “too handsy” at times but has consistently denied groping anyone. Ahead of a 2024 Channel 4 documentary about the allegations, he said he took responsibility for past behaviour but denied any exaggerated or false claims. He stated he never offered career advancement in exchange for sexual favours.

The Old Vic Theatre has separately settled with one claimant, Ruari Cannon, in an out-of-court agreement without admitting liability. A spokeswoman said the settlement considered the cost and impact of ongoing litigation on all parties.

This case highlights the challenges of pursuing justice decades after alleged abuse and raises questions about accountability in positions of power. The civil claim will examine whether Spacey used his influence to manipulate young men over an extended period. The High Court is set to hear the full case later this year, renewing public scrutiny of Spacey’s career and personal conduct.
